William H. Clarke, President & CEO

Dr. William Clarke has a career in information technology and publishing going back almost 40 years.

A PhD in astrophysics, he has combined an academic career at the University of Toronto with business management, first as President of a large Canadian publishing house, then as Executive Vice-President and Director of Research for SoftQuad Inc. during its formative years.

In addition to his business activities, he has also served on various advisory committees on information and publishing for the National Research Council of Canada, the Government of Canada Department of Industry, and as Director of several domestic and international companies involved in the publishing and distribution of books.

He has extensive experience in the management of start-up companies.

David Slocombe, Chief Technical Officer

David Slocombe has over 25 years of computing experience in the fields of text-processing and automated document formatting.

As a founder and Vice-President, R&D, of SoftQuad Inc. he was chief architect of SoftQuad Publishing Software, and contributed to the productization of SoftQuad Author/Editor, the first commercial SGML editor.

While at SoftQuad he consulted for many large companies on SGML deployment.

In 1996 he left SoftQuad to consult for Tata Infotech Ltd. (India) on SGML and XML technology and opportunities. His vision, coupled with the research efforts of Tata Infotech's talented engineers, led to the core technology behind the Exegenix Conversion Solutions.

Stephen G. Downie, VP Sales & Marketing

Steve Downie brings over 20 years of sales experience in both domestic and international markets. He is also an internationally recognized expert in structured information software.

From 1990 to 1997, Steve was Vice President of Sales for SoftQuad Inc. Over that period, SoftQuad's sales grew from $400,000 to over $20 million per year and the company successfully obtained a NASDAQ listing. Subsequently, he served as Vice President of Sales for Infrastructures for Information Inc., a venture-funded software start-up.

Since late 1998, as President of MainSale Technologies Inc. he has worked with international companies such as AIS Software (France) and Tata Infotech Limited (India) to help develop effective sales strategies and representation in the North American marketplace.

Charlie Halpern-Hamu, VP, Customer Service

Charlie Halpern-Hamu brings to Exegenix more than ten years of experience as an SGML and XML consultant, and over twenty years in structured programming. Charlie has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University, and is an international conference speaker on XML topics.

He comes to Exegenix from Incremental Development, Inc. where his focus was on helping organizations structure text and surrounding business processes, with an emphasis on simplicity and skill-transfer. Prior to that, Charlie headed up Open Text's Toronto Solution Group and was technical co-ordinator for InfoDesign Corporation's Systems Integration operations.

At Exegenix, Charlie's wide-ranging experience as an independent XML consultant, coupled with intimate knowledge of Exegenix conversion technology, guarantees our clients practical discussion to determine and refine their input specifications and XML output requirements.

Wendy Harrison, VP Development

Wendy Harrison has worked on the development of software for the creation, layout and formatting of structured documents since 1986.

She joined SoftQuad Inc. at its inception. She had direct responsibility for the release management and Quality Assurance of SoftQuad products such as SQPS (their original text formatting product), HoTMetaL (HTML editor), and XMetaL (XML editor). In various capacities at SoftQuad, she evaluated and implemented many software tools and technologies, including enterprise-level defect tracking and configuration management tools.

She brings with her a sound understanding of the entire software development process, from design through productization, and excellent skills in managing technical resources and schedules.

Rodney Boyd, Document Conversion Analyst

Rodney Boyd has worked in the electronic publishing field since 1989, as a technical writer, page layout designer, and document production automator.

He has worked with SGML and related technologies for over 10 years and has written approximately 40 manuals for SGML, XML, and HTML products.

At Exegenix he is responsible for a research project categorizing the types of graphical objects that occur in printed and electronic documents. He has an M.Sc. in Computation.

Ryan Germann, Product Manager

Since 1995, Ryan has been involved in SGML and XML projects, lending his expertise to both client-side (end user) and server-side (data processing) components.

Ryan's understanding of computers and software, and how they can fulfill needs of organisations and individual users, comes from over 20 years of technology training and experience, beginning with mainframe computer datacenters, evolving toward end-user software configuration, integration, support, and design.

He takes a pragmatic approach to XML in business, working to understand an organization's unique operational requirements, focused on helping them realize the gains in productivity and cost reductions that XML-based content, deployed across a sound XML-enabled infrastructure, will provide.

He is involved in the market research and strategic aspects of developing practical applications of Exegenix technology.
