Printing to PostScript/PDF for Exegenix Conversion Solutions

PostScript and PDF are very versatile formats. The Exegenix Conversion Solutions provide best results when the electronic print files being processed have been generated with particular characteristics, the most important ones being:

  • Electronic print files must be PostScript or PDF
  • Print-to-file through a standardized PostScript driver (see below for Windows OS information)
  • Use the highest resolution images possible
  • Full-colour output, not colour separations
  • Ensure fonts are embedded

For those who are experienced with electronic print files, ECS requirements could be classified as "full-colour Pre-Prepress PostScript (or PDF) files". That is, the kind of output that one would print to a laser printer (for page-proofing), not colour separations that one would send for producing film for final printing.

The Exegenix Conversion Solutions generate a single XML file for every input file. Though not a requirement of the technology, it is suggested that, in order to simplify post-processing tasks, documents larger than 500 pages be split into modules of around 200 pages, broken at a suitable place (for example, chapter or top-level section) by printing page ranges.

Important note on design/publishing environments

Quark XPress documents (.qxd files) rely heavily on the particular configuration of the system and the original Quark “environment” used in designing and publishing the materials. Rarely can a Quark XPress document, designed and published on a particular computer, be accurately displayed or published from a different machine without painstaking duplication of the original Quark XPress environment.

To a lesser extent, other authoring/publishing applications (Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, Adobe InDesign, etc.) also carry a similar “environment” requirement. For this reason, generating the PostScript or PDF files directly from the computer used to design/publish the original document is the most reliable way to ensure that these files are an accurate representation of the document as the author/designer intended it.

If it is not possible or practical to use the original machine, please be aware that generating the PS/PDF files on another computer, which may lack specific typefaces, etc., may introduce unintended, unknown formatting errors, which may result in the Exegenix Conversion Solutions misinterpreting the affected content.

Recommended Windows Drivers

Adobe provides a general utility for installing printer drivers, the “Universal Windows Driver Installer”, and an Adobe Distiller driver which can be installed with this utility.

You must also separately download the Adobe standard PostScript Driver. Click to Download. You will need to "unzip" the file for use with the Driver Installer utility.
